Margin % = ((Selling Price − Cost) ÷ Selling Price) × 100Take a product that costs $40 to produce and sells for $100. Profit is $60. Margin = ($60 ÷ $100) × 100 = 60%. That means 60 cents of every dollar the customer pays is profit, and 40 cents covers the cost of the item.
Why the Denominator Matters
The most common source of confusion is dividing by the wrong number. Margin always divides by the selling price (revenue), never by cost. If you accidentally divide profit by cost instead, you've calculated markup, not margin — and the two numbers can be dramatically different for the same transaction.
Using the same $40 cost and $100 price: markup = ($60 ÷ $40) × 100 = 150%. Margin on that same sale is 60%. Gross Margin vs Net Margin

Margin calculations become genuinely useful when you flip the formula around: instead of calculating margin from a price you've already chosen, you calculate the price you need to charge to hit a target margin. Suppose your cost per unit is $28 and you want a 55% margin.
Selling Price = Cost ÷ (1 − Target Margin %)Selling Price = $28 ÷ (1 − 0.55) = $28 ÷ 0.45 = $62.22. Check the work: profit = $62.22 − $28 = $34.22. Margin = $34.22 ÷ $62.22 = 55%. Not every customer or order type deserves the same margin treatment. Large wholesale orders often justify a lower per-unit margin in exchange for guaranteed volume and lower selling costs, while one-off custom or rush orders typically warrant a higher margin to compensate for the extra time and unpredictability involved. Setting explicit margin floors by segment — for example, a 35% minimum on wholesale orders and a 55% minimum on custom rush work — gives a sales team clear boundaries instead of negotiating each deal from scratch.
